Why you shouldn’t miss out on shopping local

By now, you’ve seen a lot of online shops that emerged on Facebook or Instagram that are selling different goods ranging from those famous chewy cookies, succulents, pots for your babies aka halamans, Scandinavian home furniture, and even home-cooked meals. These may have resulted from having more time spent at home, another means of livelihood, and a way of businesses to adapt to the current situation we face. This is a good way to help provide new alternatives to a community’s limited selection of resources and essentials given quarantine protocols while keeping revenue streams open for them.

To help different local communities and small businesses, the #ShopLocal and #SupportLocal, along with Instagram’s sticker of “Support Small Businesses” have seen a spike in usage to empower and show our support to them.

If you haven’t found the reasons to show your support to fellow members of the community, here are reasons to why you should:

1. Offer support and be one with the community:

We’re all used to purchasing from the bourgeoisie coffee shop across the office building, but in our work-from-home situation, many of us haven’t had the chance to do this daily. Instead of craving coffee from that shop every day, now is the perfect time to try for the first time coffee drinks from local cafes and restaurants in the neighborhood. You can also try brewing your coffee and creating mixes by ordering beans from different sellers on Instagram or Facebook.

Be one with the community by referring them to your friends too!

2. This gives you another way to discover new things

Since the rise of many homecooks, some may be just newly found talents and some may be newly promoted talents, many of them take their food creations online. Explore their new food recipes and trending food items and who know you just might add these to your list of favorite dishes.

Many of the trends we’re seeing online from people trying to recreate trending food items to selling home cooked meals and essential supplies. This is actually promoting a good environment for individuals to be self-sufficient and resourceful. Which brings about other trends like urban gardening where people in urban/commercialized areas grow their food like herbs, fruit and vegetables. Skip your usual store-bought produce and switch to products from urban gardening for cheaper and better quality.
Some of the sellers also leverage on their resources perhaps some would already know suppliers for essential items and such that won’t require you to leave your home and for some you may even get items at a much cheaper price versus what’s sold in commercial stores.

3. As proud Filipinos, we patronize our own

It is important to note that as a nation we are all going through this phase in our lives, many of which are resorting to selling whatever they can make or source to keep their families afloat amid this pandemic. By exploring and searching deep within these local listings you may also find some provincial items being sold in metro capitals which bring about much support to our farmers and suppliers in farther provinces. This allows them to have another way of getting customers and clients for their businesses. Some local sellers may even source their packaging and other raw materials from other local suppliers.

So go on and start exploring online by searching through local listings or joining community groups that share and connect local buyers and sellers. Let’s support our community and neighbors during these trying times.
